According to Helter Skelter by Bugliosi, Larry (aka Larry Bailey and Larry Jones) hung around Spahn's Ranch but was never fully accepted by Manson because of his black facial features. According to reports, he was the person who gave Linda Kasabian a knife on the evening of the Tate murders. He was also present when Manson told Kasabian to go with Tex Watson to the Tate home and do whatever he told her to do.
After the trials were over, Larry stayed involved with some of the lingering family members and participated in an attempt to free Manson and the other family members in prison for his involvement in the Hawthorne Shootout. Larry received a sentence of 20 years to life.
After serving approximately 7 years for the Hawthorne robbery, he was arrested in 1979 in Seattle after aiding the escape (getaway driver) of seven prisoners from the county jail, the shooting of a policeman, bank expropriations (used for funding their activities), and conspiracy. He was known to have ties with the Wellspring Commune, an offshoot of the Symbionese Liberation Army according to authorities. The Wellspring Commune was located in Humboldt County in Northern California and was headed by convicted murderer Artie Ray Baker. Baker was said to have masterminded the escape. One prisoner, Roger Dale Raynor was shot to death.
The Wellspring Commune was once known as the Tribal Thumb, “an offshoot of the SLA”. The people in the Tribal Thumb have backgrounds in the Students for a Democratic Society, Weathermen, Black Panthers, Black Liberation Army and other guerrilla families according to Humboldt County Sheriff.
Apparently this was where the Manson and SLA connection came from.
Larry was sentenced to two life sentences, plus an additional 80 years – all to run consecutively. In 1993 he received a “Sentence Computation Summary” stating he would become eligible for parole in about 10 years. In August of 2004, he was released.
In Bruce Davis’ 1993 parole hearing, he named Larry being present at the Shea killing.
